It’s time for another parenting class. This month we are addressing a tender subject you will likely face as a parent of a teen: Looking for an Identity. Who your teen is in Christ is one of the most important things they can learn and believe. The Bible says they are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works (Eph. 2:10), a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17) and a child of God (John 1:12).

Up to this point, your teen has been shaped by what you have told them, what you have exposed them to, what you’ve encouraged them to participate in and even how you have dressed them. Now, as a young adult, they are trying to figure out who they are as individuals.

They are growing up, maturing, stumbling along and might be pushing against what you have chosen for them. This is a healthy part of growing up and you should not be discouraged! They are not necessarily being disrespectful, disobedient adolescents; they are beginning the process of creating their own identity and trying to figure out who they are apart from you.

Though this might feel a little awkward at best and painful at worst, one day you’ll be glad for this phase of life—when you see your teen develop into the healthy adult you knew they could be.
